Pirkei Avot (literally, “Chapters of the Fathers”) has long been heralded as one of the seminal texts of Jewish wisdom and ethics. Often called by its more affectionate name, “Ethics of the Fathers,” it is one of the most well-known and widely studied texts of the Mishnah, the Oral Law of Judaism. Pirkei Avot seeks to help the reader understand the “Spirit of the Law” and not just the letter. Studying this ancient text helps us to connect with the teachings of Yeshua (Jesus) in a way which places his teachings back into the Jewish context they came from. When studying Pirkei Avot, one of the first things students begin to notice is the strong correlation between many of the teachings of this text and those of the Rabbi from Nazareth. Each of the sayings are recorded as being given by a particular sage, ranging from around the third century B.C.E. until sometime in the third century C.E., a period spanning roughly six centuries. We can easily see much of the material overlapping the teachings of Yeshua and recognize his great influence within Judaism during the centuries that follow his lifetime.
This study on Pirkei Avot is not intended to offer any kind of authoritative interpretation on the text or on the connections between it and the teachings of Yeshua. It is, however, a means by which we can become familiar with a few voices within rabbinic literature which have connections to the Master’s teachings. After all, for those who profess to be the “bride of Christ,” we should know a little at least about his family in order to fully realize the character of our Beloved.
This audio package includes a series of 6 lectures highlighting some fo the connections between Pirkei Avot and the teachings of Yeshua and his disciples.
